it's been a while. mmc's been working on lotsa stuff but we have been bad bloggers, so we haven't talked about it here. but we'll change that in 2010 - that's a resolution you can hang your hat on.

a-ux remix of "sharp drest" at the chrome kids blog

3/18/09 by fauxbrizio

cardiff's chrome kids have been killing it lately with remixes, their own tracks, and a sick new mixtape called hulk hop vs crunk rock. they also run a music blog focused on dubstep, hip-hop, glitch, and bass music. earlier this week, they posted an electro remix of "sharp drest" by new york producer a-ux. i hadn't heard before and it's off-the-wall good.

the original version of the track - by me, mochipet, and oonceoonce, is available on mochi's album microphonepet and can be downloaded for free at rcrd lbl (and other places too - see previous posts). you can also hear it in the soundtrack to nba 2k9 and catch a bunch of other great remixes of it at the remix microphonepet page.

mmc remixes daedelus for "friends of friends volume 1"

3/11/09 by fauxbrizio

friends of friends is a new label started by mmc's pal leeor brown. the concept for fof's first release goes like this:

fof invites an artist to join the fof family by signing on to do a split ep; they in turn invite another musician or group to complete the split release and commission a designer to create the ep’s artwork on a limited edition t-shirt which will include a download card. included will be the release, exclusive remixes and special content.

friends of friends volume 1 features daedelus, who asked jogger to contribute music for the second half of the split and kozyndan to design the project's cover art/t-shirt design.

the bundle, available for purchase at the fof store, features remixes by michna, eliot lipp, nosaj thing, grahm zilla of thunderheist ... and us! we remixed the daedelus track "off to the races" and got our li'l buddy cuzzo to drop some smooth lyrics on it. rcrd lbl debuted the track as a free download today. give it a listen!

daedelus - "off to the races (meanest man contest remix feat. cuzzo)"

you can read more about the project at xlr8r and pitchfork. there's also an interview with leeor about it at amoeblog.

two mmc songs in "tap tap revenge 2"

3/9/09 by fauxbrizio

check out meanest man contest's tracks "partially smart" and "the tenderloin" in tap tap revenge 2 - the new edition of the top iphone game, which was released last week.

from wikipedia:

tap tap revenge is a rhythm game by tapulous available as an application for the iphone os. the game has a simple interface, while the game itself is quite similar to popular games such as guitar hero and rock band. the goal of the game is to tap each of the colored balls when they reach the line at the bottom of the screen. if the ball is hit on the beat, the player gains points, but if not, it counts as a miss.

the game is available as a free download for the iphone and ipod touch. "partially smart" is available in the "hard" section and "the tenderloin" is under "extreme." which makes sense, because our music is both hard and extreme.

you can take screenshots of your scores - so email yours to us at heymmc at gmail dot com and we'll send a little package of fun stuff to the person who gets the highest score on one of our songs.

even if you're like me, and not lucky enough to have an iphone, you can go to rcrd lbl to download free mp3's of "partially smart" and "the tenderloin."

and for more mmc-meets-video-game fun, check out "sharp drest" in nba 2k9.

i talked to fader tv about into infinity for the new episode of "la is a nice place to live," which focuses on good's new space and the good december series.

good december launches

12/3/08 by fauxbrizio

if you're in los angeles over the next two weeks, good is hosting a series called good december from 12/05/08 through 12/19/08 in their new space on melrose. it's open to the public from 11am-5pm every day and will offer salons, panel discussions, meals, and more. there will be occasional parties in the evening hours that require an rsvp; check out the good december site for more details. there's also a nice write-up about it at flavorpill with some useful info.

i'm working on two of the ongoing pieces of the series. one is an installation of into infinity - the art and music project produced by dublab and creative commons. the other is a set of podcast interviews about the culture of sharing that i conducted with jimmy wales, chris hughes, chris dibona, caterina fake, curt smith, joi ito and a variety of other people who use sharing as a cornerstone to work they do across a variety of fields. snippets of the conversations will be running throughout the series' two weeks - grab a set of headphones and listen up!

the medicine agency's blog - blogging on meds - recently posted a write-up about mmc's "the tenderloin," as well as one about noah's quarterbar gets sad with motown project. thanks!

cars & trains' "rusty string deluxe"

magic me's new ep out now on sneakmove

9/30/08 by QuarBy

hi. it's me, quarterbar. long time no post.

in addition to my mmc duties, i'm in an oakland-based band called magic me. i play guitar and sing on some of the songs. our first ep was just released by sneakmove and is available now at itunes, emusic, amazon, and several other fine "e-tailers." it's mid-tempo indie rock stuff with organ, slide guitar, and really cool production. the cover art is by the multi-talented jesse michaels. do not front on this one, folks!

"sharp drest" featured in nba 2k9

9/26/08 by fauxbrizio

"sharp drest," the electrorap track i did with mochipet and oonceoonce (more info here) is featured on the soundtrack to nba 2k9, along with songs by dangerdoom, beastie boys, n.e.r.d., santogold, the cool kids, and others. the game comes out october 7th but the entire soundtrack is available to listen to online now.

the version of the song that's in the game was re-recorded and cleaned-up (my favorite lyric substitute: "i ganked and shot ya" becomes "i came to rock ya" - awesome!). the original version of the track is still available for free download at rcrd lbl, kexp, buzznet, and iheartcomix. woo hoo!

new mmc songs on dublab and so much silence

9/9/08 by fauxbrizio

two of our favorite music sites are offering free downloads of tracks from our new ep, we blame you.

dublab's got "you're right. it's ballin'.," along with our remix of thee more shallows' "night at the knight school."

nick catchdubs & mr. ducker's "radio friendly unit shifter" mix

9/3/08 by fauxbrizio

my pal mr. ducker collaborated with nick catchdubs on a great '90s-themed mix that was just released by streetwear label mishka. it's called radio friendly unit shifter and it's a round-up of alt-rock hits by bands ranging from cibo matto to sonic youth. i helped out on the project by mining my digi-crates for some of the songs the guys used in the set. (i haven't seen the cd yet, but word is i'm thanked in the liner notes alongside matt pinfield and daria morgendorffer - sweet.) a limited number of physical promos were given out to retailers last week at magic. the download version is available for free to everyone else. grab it!

mmc's "we blame you" ep is out now

8/25/08 by fauxbrizio

oh yes, it is indeed time to get excited. meanest man contest has a new digital ep called we blame you out now on gold robot records. it's an odds-and-ends collection featuring a new song; remixes by débruit, mochipet (with scratches by dj lion), and multi-panel (winner of the "they do" remix contest); and a cover from roman ruins (which he made by spiffing up his "they do" remix and swapping the original acapella out with his own vocals - cool!). the ep's kick-ass cover art was designed by hunter mack, who runs gold robot. you can see more of hunter's work on his site.

here's the track list:

1. we wouldn't want it any other way (débruit remix)
2. throwing away broken electronics (mochipet remix f/ dj lion)
3. you're right. it's ballin'.
4. they do (multi-panel remix)
5. they do (roman ruins version)

btw, there were lots of other great "they do" remix contest entries. we'll do a post soon with some of our favorites.

into infinity launches

8/19/08 by fauxbrizio

into infinity is an art and music exhibition i've been working on over the past few months with the good people at dublab via my job at creative commons. the project is rooted in the idea of creative reuse and is made up of 12-inch circular artworks and eight-second audio loops. we launched into infinity's online component a couple of weeks ago and are now planning a number of physical installations.

the exhibition includes pieces by kofie, dntel, odd nosdam, flying lotus, omid, lucky dragons, and a bunch of other great artists and musicians. all of the works are published under a creative commons by-nc copyright license, which lets people download, share, and remix them for noncommercial purposes. we'll add new submissions regularly, and we'll eventually invite the public to submit their remixes of the pieces for possible inclusion in the exhibition.

i've currently got two loops in the mix and noah's gonna be submitting some soon, too. you can listen to my loops by visiting the artist index and clicking "eriksolo mmc." the site's programmed to pair a random audio loop with a random visual piece every time you navigate to the next display. play around with it for a bit and you'll come up with all sorts of cool combinations.

new quarterbar mixtape + roman ruins "they do" remix + "brand new crime" online

10/11/07 by fauxbrizio

hot news: quarterbar has a brand new mixtape out! it's called shock 'em dead and was released this week by sneakmove. you can buy it on cd for just $5 postpaid in the u.s. (and $9 postpaid if you're outside of the u.s.).

shock 'em dead features a slew of beats, blends, and remixes - including qb's much-loved reworking of birdman and lil' wayne's "stuntin' like my daddy," which you can download here:

mp3: birdman and lil' wayne - "stuntin' like my daddy" (quarterbar remix)

speaking of remixes, roman ruins has produced a stellar version of "they do," to get things started right with the mmc remix contest happening through gold robot. get it here:

mp3: meanest man contest f/ kaia wong - "they do" (roman ruins remix)

finally, there's a new myspace page commemorating brand new crime - the 1998 split cassette release from mic.edu (our old rap group) and our friends substance abuse.

there are four tracks from the tape up on the page. may i suggest you give them a listen and then consider becoming brand new crime's internet friend?

new mmc ep + "some people" mp3 + remix contest

10/8/07 by fauxbrizio

meanest man contest has just released a new digital ep through the fantastic plug research label. it's called some people and it features four brand new songs.

the cover art for some people was made by the incredible jeff hurlow. you can see more of his work at dosmasks.

we've put an mp3 of the ep's lead song online for you to check out. it's called "some people (just get off on breaking hearts)." the other tracks on the ep are "you and i," "working for the weak end," and "i would leave" (which is based on a christopher willits guitar sample).

in other exciting news, gold robot records has just launched a meanest man contest remix contest in support of our new grr 7inch.

download the acapella for "they do" here and email your remix to us at heymmc at gmail dot com by december 15, 2007. our favorite entries will be featured as part of a future mmc release.

and speaking of our new grr 7inch, "throwing away broken electronics" and all the other tracks from the single are now available digitally through retailers like itunes and emusic. if you're so from-the-future that you can't stand to even touch a physical music product, this is probably your best bet. but remember: if you buy a hard copy of the 7inch, you'll get a download code that gets you the mp3s for free.

first is weekend getaway, a talk show pilot i produced with a few friends. it features an interview with and a performance by pigeon john.

second is the promotional video for google earth's new sky feature. it stars former astronaut sally ride and was scored by the one and only quarterbar. "it's out of this world."

sneakmove minicomp 2 out now on vinyl

9/14/07 by fauxbrizio

we are very happy to announce the release of sneakmove minicomp 2.

the minicomp project is made up of a series of limited-run vinyl compilations featuring short songs by a variety of awesome bands. the new release features tracks from eleven acts, including bonde do role, electric president, fog, subtitle, and us – your old friends, meanest man contest.

sneakmove minicomp 2 is pressed on translucent red vinyl and comes packaged in a super cool cover designed by sneakmove's mike senese. go, mike!

pitchfork has mentioned the record a few times in the past couple of weeks. they posted a news item about it, along with a snippets mp3. they also included the bonde do role track in one of their forkcast music posts.

our friend pete nicely made a video for "sexy rap proposition!," the mmc song on sneakmove minicomp 2. sweet pete's clip was made using a batch of found photos that feature people enjoying friendships and other fun relationships. watch it!

sneakmove minicomp 1 came out a little more than a year ago and features ditties by casiotone for the painfully alone, odd nosdam, dat politics, and baby dayliner. you can buy it on vinyl here.

sneakmove minicomp 3 is in the works now and is being compiled by bomarr of restiform bodies. it's slated to feature contributions from tunng, broken spindles, copy, and lord grunge. more info soon!

hello + new mmc single + free mp3

9/7/07 by fauxbrizio

hi there. welcome to the new meanest man contest blog. i think you're really going to like it here. fun by the truckload!

so, hey: we have a new 7inch single out on gold robot records, a great new label based in berkeley, ca. gold robot has so far released 7inches by the very excellent artists roman ruins and panther, and we're thrilled to join the ranks.

the single looks like this (the cover's available in two colors):

and

it includes four tracks. the first is "throwing away broken electronics," which features background vocals from marchelle bradanini from the super fun band bedtime for toys.

gold robot is offering a free mp3 of "t.a.b.e." on its site; you can download it here.

second up is "we wouldn't want it any other way," which features background vocals and clapping from a big group of our friends in the bay area who had been drinking at the time. thanks, guys.

then there's a remix of "throwing away broken electronics" by the illustrious copy (be sure to check out his latest album, hair guitar, available through audio dregs). copy's take on "t.a.b.e." is on some synthy 8-bit siiickness.

lastly, there's an acapella version of "they do," a duet with mixel pixel's kaia wong that was featured in its full form on our split cd with languis from a few months back on sneakmove. gold robot is going to offer a free download of the acapella on its site soon as part of a remix contest we're going to start up sometime in the next few weeks.

the record's incredibly cool cover art was drawn by casey jex smith, a san francisco-based artist who we're big fans of. you can see some of casey's other work and read an interview with him at fecal face.

the limited-run (500 pressed, individually numbered) single is just five bucks. each copy comes with a code that will let you download mp3s of all of the songs on the record for free. if you can't decide between the two cover colors (it's tough: green is so verdant, grey is so steely), why not just buy both?
