mmc's "we blame you" ep is out now
8/25/08 by fauxbrizio
oh yes, it is indeed time to get excited. meanest man contest has a new digital ep called we blame you out now on gold robot records. it's an odds-and-ends collection featuring a new song; remixes by débruit, mochipet (with scratches by dj lion), and multi-panel (winner of the "they do" remix contest); and a cover from roman ruins (which he made by spiffing up his "they do" remix and swapping the original acapella out with his own vocals - cool!). the ep's kick-ass cover art was designed by hunter mack, who runs gold robot. you can see more of hunter's work on his site.
here's the track list:
1. we wouldn't want it any other way (débruit remix)
2. throwing away broken electronics (mochipet remix f/ dj lion)
3. you're right. it's ballin'.
4. they do (multi-panel remix)
5. they do (roman ruins version)
btw, there were lots of other great "they do" remix contest entries. we'll do a post soon with some of our favorites.
into infinity launches
8/19/08 by fauxbriziointo infinity is an art and music exhibition i've been working on over the past few months with the good people at dublab via my job at creative commons. the project is rooted in the idea of creative reuse and is made up of 12-inch circular artworks and eight-second audio loops. we launched into infinity's online component a couple of weeks ago and are now planning a number of physical installations.
the exhibition includes pieces by kofie, dntel, odd nosdam, flying lotus, omid, lucky dragons, and a bunch of other great artists and musicians. all of the works are published under a creative commons by-nc copyright license, which lets people download, share, and remix them for noncommercial purposes. we'll add new submissions regularly, and we'll eventually invite the public to submit their remixes of the pieces for possible inclusion in the exhibition.
i've currently got two loops in the mix and noah's gonna be submitting some soon, too. you can listen to my loops by visiting the artist index and clicking "eriksolo mmc." the site's programmed to pair a random audio loop with a random visual piece every time you navigate to the next display. play around with it for a bit and you'll come up with all sorts of cool combinations.

new quarterbar mixtape + roman ruins "they do" remix + "brand new crime" online
10/11/07 by fauxbriziohot news: quarterbar has a brand new mixtape out! it's called shock 'em dead and was released this week by sneakmove. you can buy it on cd for just $5 postpaid in the u.s. (and $9 postpaid if you're outside of the u.s.).
shock 'em dead features a slew of beats, blends, and remixes - including qb's much-loved reworking of birdman and lil' wayne's "stuntin' like my daddy," which you can download here:
mp3: birdman and lil' wayne - "stuntin' like my daddy" (quarterbar remix)
speaking of remixes, roman ruins has produced a stellar version of "they do," to get things started right with the mmc remix contest happening through gold robot. get it here:
mp3: meanest man contest f/ kaia wong - "they do" (roman ruins remix)
finally, there's a new myspace page commemorating brand new crime - the 1998 split cassette release from mic.edu (our old rap group) and our friends substance abuse.
there are four tracks from the tape up on the page. may i suggest you give them a listen and then consider becoming brand new crime's internet friend?
new mmc ep + "some people" mp3 + remix contest
10/8/07 by fauxbriziomeanest man contest has just released a new digital ep through the fantastic plug research label. it's called some people and it features four brand new songs.
the cover art for some people was made by the incredible jeff hurlow. you can see more of his work at dosmasks.
we've put an mp3 of the ep's lead song online for you to check out. it's called "some people (just get off on breaking hearts)." the other tracks on the ep are "you and i," "working for the weak end," and "i would leave" (which is based on a christopher willits guitar sample).
in other exciting news, gold robot records has just launched a meanest man contest remix contest in support of our new grr 7inch.
download the acapella for "they do" here and email your remix to us at heymmc at gmail dot com by december 15, 2007. our favorite entries will be featured as part of a future mmc release.
and speaking of our new grr 7inch, "throwing away broken electronics" and all the other tracks from the single are now available digitally through retailers like itunes and emusic. if you're so from-the-future that you can't stand to even touch a physical music product, this is probably your best bet. but remember: if you buy a hard copy of the 7inch, you'll get a download code that gets you the mp3s for free.

minicomp2 is pressed on translucent red vinyl and comes packaged in a super cool cover designed by sneakmove's mike senese. go, mike!
pitchfork has mentioned minicomp2 a few times in the past couple of weeks. they posted a news item about it, which features an mp3 of snippets taken from the record. they also included the bonde do role track in one of their "forkcast" music posts.
our awesome friend pete nicely made a video for "sexy rap proposition!," the mmc song on minicomp2. sweet pete's clip was made using a batch of found photos that feature people enjoying friendships and other fun relationships. watch it!
the first minicomp came out a little more than a year ago and features ditties by casiotone for the painfully alone, odd nosdam, dat politics, and baby dayliner. it's pretty close to being sold out, but there are still a few copies available here.

hello + new mmc single + free mp3
9/7/07 by fauxbriziohi there. welcome to the new meanest man contest blog. i think you're really going to like it here.
so, hey: we have a new 7inch single out on gold robot records, a great new label based in berkeley, ca. gold robot has so far released 7inches by the very excellent artists roman ruins and panther, and we're thrilled to join the ranks.
the single looks like this (the cover's available in two colors):
and
it includes four tracks. the first is "throwing away broken electronics," which features background vocals from marchelle bradanini from the super fun band bedtime for toys.
gold robot is offering a free mp3 of "t.a.b.e." on its site; you can download it here.
second up is "we wouldn't want it any other way," which features background vocals and clapping from a big group of our friends in the bay area who had been drinking at the time. thanks, guys.
then there's a remix of "throwing away broken electronics" by the illustrious copy (be sure to check out his latest album, hair guitar, available through audio dregs). copy's take on "t.a.b.e." is on some synthy 8-bit siiickness.
lastly, there's an acapella version of "they do," a duet with mixel pixel's kaia wong that was featured in its full form on our split cd with languis from a few months back on sneakmove. gold robot is going to offer a free download of the acapella on its site soon as part of a remix contest we're going to start up sometime in the next few weeks.
the record's incredibly cool cover art was drawn by casey jex smith, a san francisco-based artist who we're big fans of. you can see some of casey's other work and read an interview with him at fecal face.
the limited-run (500 pressed, individually numbered) single is just five bucks. each copy comes with a code that will let you download mp3s of all of the songs on the record for free. if you can't decide between the two cover colors (it's tough: green is so verdant, grey is so steely), why not just buy both?
